Interesting Find – Google Operating System (gOS)

This one has been around for a while, but few people are aware of it. Google has an Operating System (gOS), well designed to be a “conceptual” Google Operating that is based upon Ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy! Google Operating systems made their debut on some $199.00 PCs that were sold by Wal-Mart.  The Google OS, which will probably be named something else real soon, is not affiliated with Google, but integrates many of Google’s offerings into the OS.  This has also been called the “Green” OS.

The Google Operating System is based on linux and is free and open source. My only hope

is that they will simplify the 2 main problems holding back the Linux Operating Systems – Linux desparately needs Easy, non-command line program installs and widely supported driver support which hopefully they can help bring about. I have introduced many people to linux and it has several advantages over Windows, but its major flaws for the Windows User making the cross-over that I have found has been program installations and lack of drivers.

gOS hasn’t completely overcame these issues, but I am hopeful that they will in future versions.

Don’t get me wrong Linux has tried to overcome these problems and with new programs like CNR (Click-N-Run) it is helping to close the gap with program installs…but even with this it is nowhere near as simple as Install Shield or Windows Installer. Users have become accustomed to double clicking to begin and hitting next until the program is installed.

But I don’t want to get off topic too much so here are some details on the Google Operating System (gOS).
